Local mental health charity Hull and East Yorkshire Mind is opening a new Community Hub in Bridlington to help support individuals who find themselves homeless or at risk of rough sleeping.

The Hub, based at 35 Wellington Road in Bridlington, will be open 7 days a week to support local people, and will officially open on Monday 3rd April 2023.

It is funded by the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB) and East Riding Health and Care Partnership. The service is funded for 1 year starting 1 April 2023 – 31 March 2024.

Hull and East Yorkshire Mind will be on hand to support individuals to become more independent, whilst also offering support to find accommodation, reduce drug and alcohol misuse where present and provide individuals with support to access to other health care services such as getting appointments with GP’s, dentists and opticians.

In addition to above and in partnership with Space2BHeard, individuals attending the hub will also have the opportunity to access high quality counselling and psychotherapy. This will include receiving up to 20 sessions that will aim to address some of the negative aspects of an individual’s life using a trauma informed and person centred approach.

Sam Bell, Director of Operations at Hull and East Yorkshire Mind said:

“We are delighted to be working with our local partners to develop and implement a new service to support our local homeless community.

Evidence shows that there is a considerable link between homelessness and mental health problems; however, this link is often overlooked. Our new Community Hub, in partnership with Space2BHeard will be available 7 days a week to support individuals from all walks of life, to give them support, to give them respect and to give them hope.”

Verity Wilkinson-Cunningham, Senior Mental Health Commissioning Manager at
East Riding of Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership said:

“Within the East Riding, we are committed to working together with our partners and communities in order to support those people who are most vulnerable, which includes those living with complex needs or in very difficult circumstances.

We recognise that Mental Health is only one factor in someone’s current experience, and our aim with our new Hub is to support people who are Rough Sleeping or at Risk of Rough Sleeping meet their basic needs, agree their own wellbeing goals, and build trust with the team within the Hub and with other services in the local area. The project has the ultimate aim of getting the people we support into circumstances where they feel safe, so that any treatable Mental or Physical Health needs can be prioritised, assessed and treated.”

Both the support on offer and the building decorations have been co-produced with local people, all with experience of rough sleeping and homelessness. A consultation event was held on the 14th February 2023 where individuals were able to share their views about what the service looks like – this included deciding the opening hours of the service.

Michelle Shanley, Clinical Director at Space2BHeard CIC said:

“We were excited to be asked to be part of this innovate project working in partnership with Hull and East Yorkshire Mind and other local organisations to provide such a needed service to people with experience of rough sleeping.

This client group can find accessing traditional services challenging and we have worked with our partners to create a bespoke service that is accessible. Space2BHeard is proud to be offering psychotherapy to individuals as part of this service.”

The building will officially open on Monday 3rd April and the full address is 35 Wellington Road, Bridlington, YO15 2BA. The launch event will take place between 10am-1pm.
