My name is Poppy, I’m fifteen, and I’m in Year 10 at Kingswood Academy. I chose Hull and East Yorkshire Mind for my placement because I’m passionate about supporting others and have a strong interest in mental health and wellbeing.
During my time here, I took part in a range of different tasks. I learned how to create several social media posts about mental wellbeing and self-care, as well as a blog about what mental wellbeing means to me. I also designed my own fundraiser idea, along with the social media posts, emails, and posters to go with it. Lastly, I had the opportunity to create content for Hull and East Yorkshire Mind’s social media platforms.
Out of all the tasks I worked on during my placement, my favourite was definitely creating my own fundraiser. I really enjoyed having the freedom to come up with an idea from scratch and being able to plan it exactly how I wanted. It was fun to be creative and take charge of everything – from the social media posts to the emails and posters. I liked being able to put my own spin on it and felt proud seeing the final result come together.
In terms of marketing, I have learnt that understanding your audience’s needs and interests is vital, as it helps you create content that feels relevant and meaningful to them. I have also learnt the importance of raising awareness in a respectful and informative way when creating content about mental health, as it is a very personal topic. Using respectful language helps create a space where people feel seen and valued, rather than misunderstood. My creativity skills have developed massively over the past week, along with my independence and initiative.
On my first day, I felt quite nervous because I didn’t know anyone and wasn’t sure what tasks I would be assigned. I was also a bit anxious about fitting in and making a good impression, but I was excited to learn and gain new experiences. Now, after finishing my work experience, I feel very comfortable with all the staff and much more confident! I would like to pursue a career in marketing when I’m older. The staff at Hull and East Yorkshire Mind are so kind and welcoming, and it’s a really positive work environment.
I would absolutely recommend work experience at Hull and East Yorkshire Mind to a friend, as it has been an amazing experience for me. I will take away my creativity and confidence from my time here and am hoping to get more experience in marketing at Hull and East Yorkshire Mind in the future!
