Every June, Pride Month gives us a moment to celebrate the strength, diversity, and resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s a time to honour the progress that’s been made, reflect on the challenges still faced, and show support for a future where everyone can live as their full, authentic selves, without fear, discrimination, or judgement.
But while Pride is a celebration, it’s also a reminder of why continued support, visibility, and understanding are so important, especially when it comes to mental health.
Mental health and the LGBTQIA+ Community
People who identify as LGBTQIA+ are statistically more likely to experience mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. This isn’t because of their identity, it’s because of the discrimination, exclusion, and stigma that many face in their daily lives.
From bullying at school and rejection from family, to workplace prejudice and barriers in accessing inclusive healthcare, the emotional toll can be significant. It’s important to recognise that being LGBTQIA+ is not a mental illness, but not feeling safe or accepted can have a serious impact on someone’s wellbeing.
Pride is about more than celebration, it’s about support
At Hull and East Yorkshire Mind, we believe that everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and supported. That’s why we’re proud to stand with the LGBTQIA+ community, this month and every month.
We’re committed to providing inclusive mental health services that respect each person’s identity and lived experience. Whether you’re looking for someone to talk to, joining one of our peer support groups, or accessing therapy, we’re here, with open minds and open hearts.
You are not alone
If you’re struggling with your mental health or identity, know this: you are not alone. There are people who understand, who will listen without judgement, and who are here to help you feel safe and supported.
Because mental health is for everyone, and everyone deserves to feel proud of who they are.
